In 2003, the UK Government established the National Standardization Strategic Framework (NSSF) as part of its commitment to innovation and technology. The NSSF aims to promote the use of standards and standardization in order to create competitive advantage for UK businesses.
At heart, a standard is simply an agreed means of achieving a goal. In a constantly evolving world, it is vital that people throughout industry, government and all sectors of society take a collaborative role in standardization. The NSSF works with these groups to ensure that the standardization process is flexible, relevant and effective at national, European and international levels.

Standards open doors to national and international business. They contribute £2.5 billion annually to the UK economy and account for 13% growth in labour productivity. |
Standards offer protection, reliability and choice. They ensure safety, quality and compatibility while providing freedom from discrimination and a means of redress. |
