To protect the public from unsafe gas installations, the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers (CORGI) was formed in 1970. Affiliation to the scheme was voluntary until 1991, when CORGI became the Council for Registered Gas Installers and registration for gas fitters became compulsory. CORGI now accredits more than 50,000 businesses and 100,000 individual gas appliance fitters.
